Ava Sedgwick is originally from Australia where she cultivated her story-telling by studying law and politics. She lives in Ireland and has a Masters in Creative Writing with first class honours from the University of Limerick.

To fund her far-from-lucrative writing career, Ava has worked in numerous jobs including as a poker dealer, union official, political speechwriter, kitchenhand, bartender, cleaner, mushroom picker, legal executive and herbal skincare manufacturer. She currently pays her bills by moonlighting as a part-time community advocate and running anti-bias workshops. While this varied experience brings colour to her fiction, she is very grateful to the Arts Council of Ireland for their support with an Agility Award grant. 

She won the 2024 Gemini Magazine Short Story Contest, and the novel she is redrafting was longlisted in the Mslexia Novel Competition and received an Honourable Mention in the Great Gutsy Novelist First Chapter Prize. 

Her stories have been published by Shooter Literary Magazine, Elegant Literature and Northern Gravy as well as longlisted or shortlisted in numerous competitions such as the Bridport Short Story, Masters Review Reprint and Bath Short Story prizes.

She has taught creative writing workshops, experiments with poetry, and is very fond of dancing, camping and cheese.
